Day 3- Camp Begins

By Josh Roozeboom

Day 3 got off to a good start eating breakfast at La Mana. The meal consisted of a tortilla, rice, black beans, eggs, plantains, and homemade tropical juice.

After meeting up with the peace corps (our translators for the next few days) we headed to the soccer field to start of the first day of camp. The kids were already gathering as we approached the field and more came as the day went on. There was a total of around 45 kids ages kindergarten-6th grade and they were all thrilled to be there with smiles on their faces. We started off with group stretching and warm-ups and then broke off into 3 groups according to age.

We worked with the kids on passing, shooting, and dribbling with various games and scrimmages. Almost all directions we gave had to be translated to the kids by the translators because most of us couldn't speak fluent spanish. It was pretty frustrating to have kids ask us questions and not being able to respond much. It was amazing to see that even though we couldn't maybe communicate very well we could connect with the game of soccer by just starting to pass with them. We took a group photo at the very end with everyone that participated.

We then went back to where we ate breakfast and had a choice of chicken, fish, or beef with sides. From there we drove back to our condos and had about 2 hours of free time and most of us relaxed and slept. At around 3:30 we headed to the beach where we enjoyed riding the waves in and climbing the rocks on the beach.

We had an unplanned indoor scrimmage scheduled at 8 and the team ended up not showing up. We then just asked some kids that were there to join in with us to have even teams. The team of Elliot, Stephen, Lucas, and the boys that joined in won.

We then came back to the condos and gathered to reflect on the day. We talked about how we were challenged that day and how we saw God.
